Executive MPH

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the program’s ranking?
The Executive MPH programs is part of the Health Policy and Administration department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which is currently ranked third in the nation by U.S. News & World Report and first by Modern Healthcare.

Why are you shutting down the operations of the executive master’s programs for a year instead of making the changes gradually?
We looked at every option on how to handle the redesign process and made every attempt to accommodate everyone involved but we came to the conclusion that it wasn’t in any stakeholder’s best interests to keep the program running while we undertake this massive task. We are devoting all our resources to the restructuring process.

Why are you redesigning an already top-ranked program?
As the health care industry continues to change, our programs are evolving so we can continue to offer the highest-quality education for our managers and leaders. Health Policy and Management (HPM) is going to streamline our programs to make them shorter, more focused and more easily accessible to professionals working full-time.

What is your hope in redesigning the programs?
HPM plans to preserve the cohort model with time on campus and maximize networking opportunities, enhance innovative and flexible learning models, optimize the use of technology and develop a lifelong relationship with our students based on a continuous learning model.

What do I do between now and fall 2011?
If interested, we are looking at ways to involve you in the redesign process. Ex: blog and periodic Survey Monkey input. We are also encouraging students to take refresher courses in finance, statistics and economics. Email emp@unc.edu for workbook recommendations.

Why should I wait? What’s in it for me?
The restructured program will be the same high-quality program but will be shorter in length. The program will be a better reflection of the current and expected healthcare environment encompassing the tremendous change occurring at a high pace.

Will we admit once or twice a year in the new executive master’s programs?
We won’t know until the redesign process is further along.

Will the cohort size change (how selective are we?)
We won’t know until the redesign process is further along.

What are the changes to the published curriculum?
We don’t know yet as it is too early in the redesign effort. However, two certainties exist: the quality of the program will be maintained and you will be invited to share your ideas throughout the redesign process.

What if I started an application for fall 2010, should I complete the application or hold off until next admission cycle?
The application system has been suspended. You will not be able to go back into the system to complete. You will have to restart your application when the application opens for admission to the fall 2011 cohort.

What if I have sent my academic records, GMAT/GRE scores and recommendation letters for admissions into the fall 2010 program? Will I have to resend these for the next year’s admission?
Any information that you have sent in will be kept in your file for one year’s time.

When will the first cohort of the newly redesigned executive master’s programs begin?
We will relaunch the executive master’s programs in fall 2011. Please check our website, Facebook and Twitter pages when the application system will open.
